Tomorrow
At last the inside story of Colin Garratt's remarkable odyssey in documenting the last steam locomotives of the world. No one had ever before made a profession of photographing trains but in Colin's own words `someone had to do it - a whole dynasty was fading into history'.
After abandoning a promising commercial career for .50 from Social Security, friends gave him six months in his self imposed task as devoid of funds and without a modern camera he 'turned professional'. The book takes us from those austere beginnings in 1969 right up to the present day and reveals chapter by chapter how fifty countries have been covered, twenty books written and three nationally touring Audio Visual Theatre Shows produced along with the formation of a team of six people to help win the battle. The work continues apace until the end of the century when the great legend of steam - the industrial revolution's brightest light - will become a closed chapter.
A compelling and touchingly personal read, this unique book is a campaign for railways from cover to cover and yet it is not by any stretch of the imagination a railway book. It embraces with equal passion photography, the stage and adventure. Above all the book presents a concept of one man's determination against all odds to fulfil an ideal.
Lavish illustrations in both colour and black-and-white follow every step of Colin's quest, most of which have never appeared in print before.
