A Pictorial History of Bush Flying with the Military in the Defense of Alaska And America.
Inside Dust Jacket
Air raid sirens screamed across Unalaska Island the U.S. Navy's hastily sent uncoded message, "About to be bombed," electrified Alaska as Japanese "Zero" fighters and "Kate" dive bombers from the aircraft carrier RYUJO hit Dutch Harbor on June 3, 1942.
The "incident," a Japanese diversionary tactic for the Battle of Midway, resulted in the enemy occupation of Kiska and Attu Aleutian Islands and a costly campaign by United States and Canadian forces to eliminate the only World War II Axis invasion of North America.
It had happened mid 1930 warnings by early strategists Anthony J. Dimond, Billy Mitchell and "Hap" Arnold of possible invasion of Alaska by hostile forces was now a grim reality.
Author Mills pictorially records General Simon Buckner's Alaska air defense build-up with the assistance of veteran bush pilots such as Joe Crosson, Bob Reeve and Art Woodley; how dynamic, hard-hitting Colonel "Eric" Eareckson led a handful of obsolete bombers and fighters in the Kiska Blitz against the Japanese stronghold that pilots of lumbering U.S. Navy flying boats referred to as "The PBY elimination center."
