This is a selection of 43 outstanding drawings by the world-famous Swedish firm of illustrators, Tre Tryckare AB (Three Printers, Inc.) in Goteborg. All the illustrations are eminently suitable for coloring. If you want to retain all the printed lines, it is best to use transparent washes, felt-tip pens or colored pencils. Though the drawings abound in interesting details, it is not necessary to color each small area separately. Large sections of these engines and cars were uniform in color. The examples on the covers, rendered in authentic period coloring, are an excellent guide to the distribution of tones and values.
Historical interest was a primary criterion in the selection. Beginning with one of the earliest experimental steam locomotives (1805), the items include the first commercially used engine, one of the first passenger locomotives (all of these in England), the first train in Germany, many early American locomotives and a number of foreign engines. Toward the end of the book, electric, gasoline-electric and diesel locomotives make their appearance, and we are led up to the current age.
The general chronological order is disregarded once or twice for technical exigencies of book production. A very few nineteenth-century passenger cars are also included because of their great interest.
