DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The anthracite coal industry revolutionized the way America developed from the 1830's through the early part of the twentieth century. It was key to the running of the industrial revolution that swept the country in the late nineteenth century. The discovery of anthracite worked hand in hand with the invention of the steam engine, the development of railroads, and the production of iron to change America from an agriculturally based economy to the largest industrial nation in the world. From its humble beginnings as a fuel that would not ignite, to becoming the fuel of the industrial revolution, anthracite changed the wilderness region of eastern Pennsylvania into one of economic boom.
The anthracite industry, which saw its zenith at the turn of the twentieth century, has gradually declined to its present day status. This book explores the history of the development of the Western Middle Field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region during its heyday from the 1830's to the 1930's. It takes a look at the mineral wealth, the collieries, and the railroads that served the region. It also explores how anthracite was removed from the ground, and made ready for market use.
