They were the first of a type of fully articulated locomotives produced by Beyer, Peacock \u0026amp; Co., to the patent of H.W.Garratt - granted in 1907. The design was adopted in an attempt to solve a long standing problem faced by the Tasmanian Government Railways and began as something of a gamble.
