K1 is one of a pair of identical locomotives built for the Tasmanian Government Railways in 1909. They were the first of a type of fully articulated locomotives produced by Beyer, Peacock & Co., to the patent of H.W.Garratt - granted in 1907. The design was adopted in an attempt to solve a long standing problem faced by the Tasmanian Government Railways and began as something of a gamble. This paid offhandsomely for all parties as the ultimate success of this design is backed by the fact that the number of engines of the Garratt type built totalled 1115 with the final engine produced in 1958, almost fifty years later.
