Most railroad lines in the United States are now principally freight carriersthis is in contrast to railroading's very early days in 1830's when the first tracks were laid. It was thought that the principal business of those early railroads would be the carriage of people. Time and business demand quickly showed that railroads had an even bigger national jobmoving both people and freight. Both sides of the business grewby the 1927 centennial of railroading almost 830 million people rode American passenger trains. Impressive as that number is, it still represented a decline of nearly 400 million passengers from peak national ridership in 1920. Through the 1920's railroad passenger traffic, especially riders traveling short distance or on rural branch lines, declined as all-weather paved roads and automobiles proliferated across the land.
