Here in 285 stunning full-color, never before published photographs, Don Ball, Jr., chronicles American railroads of the 1960s and '70s-the second generation.
During the 1940s and '50s the mighty steam locomotives on our nation's railroads were replaced by colorful streamlined diesels. In the 1960s diesels went through a metamorphosis with enormously powerful, boxy-looking hood units replacing the first-generation engines. Often vividly colored, these engines were as exotic as their predecessors were beautiful. The graceful diesels that once headed such trains as the 20th Century Limited, Empire Builder, Super Chief, and Panama Limited were quickly relegated to secondary runs, commuter service, freight service-and scrap.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
