When most Americans think of President Abraham Lincoln, they usually associate him with the Civil War, the Gettysburg Address, and the abolition of slavery. Few remember that Lincoln's signature also authorized the biggest construction project in his time, the nation's first transcontinental railroad, linking America's East with lands in her West.
Up to that time, travel to and from the developed eastern states to the new territories on the other side of the continent could best be described as an ordeal. The choices were a months-long, tedious wagon train journey, or an equally long sea voyage that took one down around South America's Cape Horn. Little wonder then, that the vision of traveling to the West in a matter of just a few day; excited our citizens beyond words.
Construction was undertaken on two fronts, from the western end of the route in Sacramento, California, and from the eastern end in Omaha, Nebraska. When at last the two segments of the new railroad were joined in 1869 with a great celebration at Promontory, Utah, a new era of American progress had begun.
This great project is now overshadowed by much newer and swifter transportation methods. Yet, the joining of this nation by rail remains one of the major milestones of America's evolution. Still in use today, 125 years after its completion, the original transcontinental rail route remains a major transportation corridor. It can truly be said that the early day planners and builders selected a route that has met the test of time.
