The story of railroading in North America from its primitive I. beginnings in the east during the 1830s to the countrywide system that exists today is a romantic and stormy one. From the moment the words 'done, done, done' were flashed across the continent as the last spike of the first coast-to-coast link was driven in at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869, through the years of wars and depression and into the new Space Age, the railroads grew, changed, prospered, faltered and competed in their effort to fulfil the nation's transport needs. The rise and fall of the steam locomotive, the promise and eventual failure of electrification, and the diesel revolution which amazed onlookers by its speed and completeness are all part of the heritage of the North American Railways.
