Preface
YOUR COPY 0F THE American Railroad Journal is a new publication in format and content, nonetheless an old one in name. This yearly digest of Transportation Heritage is a long planned project of the publisher. The seed began to germinate several years ago when numerous railroad articles and illustrations were unearthed in the publisher's own collections. With the passing of the iron horse, the trolley and interurban trains, the need for a quality railroad historical publication was realized.
The publisher is determined to shape this annual volume into an outstanding publication in the field of transportation history, appealing alike to the professional historian, railroad man and enthusiast. The world of railroad endeavor will be interpreted in its broadest terms in hopes the novice might enjoy these pages. We expect to cover the railroad scene from the history of the steam locomotive to the man at the throttle; travel the bands of steel from Atlantic to Pacific, south to Mexico, north to Canada. We will review current books, literature and railroadiana worthy of your attention.
Our format is an experiment, if you like and support it, this new journal of railroad history will grow. The American Railroad Journal is not connected with or affiliated with any historical association. Our only aim is to share America's pioneer past, when the steam locomotive, the clanging trolley and the fast interurban were the prime means of transportation.
