INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this book is to provide, an overview of the passenger train services from the 1940s to the Amtrak Era beginning in 1971. The 1940s and `50s era of rail passenger service in North America was a period of time with many new streamliners. It was a transition period from steam to diesel power and from heavyweight passenger equipment to the new streamlined cars. Many trains operated with a mixture of equipment consisting of the heavyweight cars dating from 1920s and the new streamlined cars. It was a period of change, with periods of passenger traffic growth on many routes and then a decline that nearly spelled the end of train service in North America. This in turn led to the creation of Amtrak, which as of 2008 is experiencing substantial growth in passenger traffic with new record levels. The commuter train services are also experiencing such growth. And all of this is happening when there are still many folks in North America who believe that railroads will soon be past history. This not only applies to passenger service but freight service as well. This writer has even heard that it would be easier for the coal mines to simply ship by truck to the power plants. Can you imagine that?
