Once in a while, not as often as we might wish, an old publication is discovered tucked away in some obscure place -made priceless through time, like a pearl in an oyster. Such was the finding of an original copy of this booklet, issued by the American Locomotive Company in 1904 to publicize its participation in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of that year. Held in the 1400 acres of Forest Park in St. Louis from April 20 to December I, the Exposition was a centennial event to commemorate the signing of the Louisiana Purchase a century before, in which the U.S. took title to land that brought thirteen new states into the young republic.
The original copy of the publication was in such excellent condition, and the construction specifications and locomotive photos so indicative of the types of engines being manufactured at the turn of this century, that it was decided to share this collector's item with those interested in American railroading. It is reprinted through the collaboration of the Mohawk & Hudson Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, and Old Dorp Books, publisher of Schenectady historical books, and by courtesy of Alco Products, Inc. (formerly American Locomotive Company), a subsidiary of Studebaker Worthington, Inc. The original negatives of the photos in the booklet are now property of the City of Schenectady, in care of the Mohawk & Hudson Chapter's Alco Historic Photos.
Except for the addition of this page, the booklet is reprinted in its entirety, exactly the way it appeared in 1904.
