DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Going from the Ford Trimotor in 1929 to the Douglas DC-3 in only six years represented a giant leap in airframe and powerplant technology. Four-engine transoceanic flying boats carried passengers in the lap of luxury across the Pacific before World War II, bridging the gap to large four-engine post-War landplanes such as the Douglas DC-4 and Lockheed Constellation. By 1948, the luxurious Boeing Stratocruiser epitomized modern airline travel, powered by the largest radial piston engines ever produced. The final plateau was the Douglas DC-7 and Lockheed Super Constellation, the zenith of piston-powered airliners. The advancement and success of all these great aircraft can be linked directly to the concurrent growth of their revolutionary powerplants, and this book, written by a former airline pilot and a radial engine historian, tells this compelling story for the very first time.
