PREFACE
One of the pitfalls of journalistic writing is that it becomes outdated very rapidly. Scarcely a year after my first work, Focus: The Railroad in Transition, appeared on the bookshelves, there arose the recurring stories that marked the economic disaster of the Penn Central. Focus: The Railroad in Transition ended in that unique period of time when economists, businessmen, government officials, and many lay people had given their blessing to the wedding of the New York Central and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Thus, America's New Railroads takes up where Focus: The Railroad in Transition leaves off.
America's New Railroads, unlike Focus: The Railroad in Transition, is not a historical chronicle; it is a more pictorially oriented work, containing detailed captions which, taken as a whole, move the reader through the historical period covered by the book. One can see the erosion of the Penn Central, followed by the comparably healthy operations of the two competing roads, the Chessie and the Norfolk and Western. The resurgence of the passenger train also follows a historical sequence. With Conrail, this pictorial essay depicts something that most likely will have vanished by the time this book is on the shelves-the mixture of the locomotives of at least ten railroads, all over the Conrail network. Such a collection of mixed motive power will probably never appear again.
