The war in which the United States found itself in December 1941 made greater demands upon transportation than any conflict in its history. This fact was spectacularly illustrated by the vast distances that American troops and supplies had to traverse to reach such faraway places as Australia, the Solomon Islands, and North Africa. At the time, U.S. railroads had so much less equipment than a decade before that it seemed improbable they would be able to meet all the demands for both freight and passenger service, which far exceeded expectations. But, by the end of World War II, the nation's railroads had doubled in freight traffic and quadrupled the passenger traffic handled by them. In mid-1945, they had virtually succeeded in remedying all the major problems during the four years of war effort, including severe winters, carloadings, minimum transports, etc. And, never since Pearl Harbor had the greatest war effort for production and combat ever made by any nation been hampered by lack of railroad service.
This book is a graphic appreciation of patriotic and effective endeavor by railroad management, railroad employees, and shippers and government agencies that cooperated with those railroad. The book's photos, which were taken by some of America's leading railroad and military photographers, show various types of locomotives hauling military movements, wartime freight, and passenger trains turned troop carriers. This illustrated memoir should prove of interest to World War II buffs, railroad fans, model builders, photographers, hobbyists, and Canadian and American citizens.
