Locomotive Roster and Mill Summary
This book, Number 11, covers the activities of those lumber companies that operated logging railroads in Northwestern Pennsylvania. In includes the counties of Erie, Crawford, Venango, Warren, and part of Forest County.
Northwestern Pennsylvania, like the rest of the state, was once covered by an unbroken forest. The Allegheny River and its tributaries drain all of this area except for a strip along Lake Erie. The trees of the original forest were of mixed species of hardwoods, 'hemlock, and white pine, which was predominant throughout the Allegheny water shed. Originally it contained great stands of some of the finest pine to be found anywhere and remnants of the old stumps are still visible in many places.
