In the beginning, railway stations were more than modest "points of embarkation but by the mid-19th century they had developed into the most grandiose of edifices, the so-called "cathedrals of the modern age," in which new structural techniques were combined with imposing facades and lavish interiors. Those that survive are treasured today as supreme expressions of industrial might and majesty.
After World War I, a growing emphasis on functionalism in many countries robbed the station of its former pomp. Increasingly, new stations became antiseptic and characterless places. This trend was accompanied by a rising disenchantment with the elaborate structures of the past, many of which were destroyed or disfigured. Concurrently, vast stretches of railway lines in Europe and the rest of the world were abandoned. As a result, the railway station became an endangered species.
Today, renewed appreciation of 19th-century architecture, and of rail travel in general, has given stations a new lease on life. All Stations tells their story from the 1830s to the present day, viewing them not only as gems of architecture, but also as feats of engineering, nerve centers of our cities, microcosms of changing society, and landmarks in our lives. With its feast of illustrations and a provocative text, it invites us all to take a fresh look at the past, present and future role of stations throughout the world.
All Stations is based on a widely praised exhibition first shown at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and subsequently in various European cities, including a four-month run at the Science Museum in London.
