Here's E. M. Frimbo, the world's greatest railroad buff-the man who has traveled more than 2,334,000 miles by rail on six continents over six decades, the man of incomparable wit and panache who has, in a word, made the best of living in the wrong century.
For those who have never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Frimbo, there is no pleasure at all quite like spending an evening with him. His adventures recounted here offer the reader the ultimate armchair journey: join him aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway; through the Casbah of Tangier with the mysterious Contessa; up and down the Pacific Coast (where he encounters old friend Fats Waller): across the subcontinent on the Madras & Southern Mahratta; into the fabled and exclusive quarters of the world-renowned (and world-envied) Lexicographers' Club.
E. M. Frimbo's world is a world of ultimate style and urbanity: the finest talk, the finest food, the finest linen napery, the finest companions may be found where Frimbo is found, and journeying with him through the pages of this book is journeying with the most unreservedly civilized and charming travelers-in-class ever to grace the Orient Express. Am. ABOARD!
It took a chorus of special pleadings to persuade Mr. Frimbo's official biographers, Rogers E. M. Whitaker and Anthony Hiss (Mr. Whitaker is particularly close to the Great Man), to consent to collect their occasional profiles of Frimbo, many of which have appeared in The New Yorker. Once started, however, Messrs. Whitaker and Hiss were unstoppable: to this basic source material they have added nearly a score more interviews, none of which have ever appeared in print before-among them, some exceedingly rare excerpts from Frimbo's own journals and letters.
