On August 11, 1899, the Algoma Central Railway Company was incorporated to provide rail transportation north from Sault Ste. Marie. On May 23, 1901, the company's name was changed to The Algoma Central & Hudson Bay Railway Company. Nearly 65 years later, on June 20, 1965, the name was changed again, this time to Algoma Central Railway.
Francis Clergue laid the foundation for the present City of Sault Ste. Marie and saw the growth potential for a large industrial center. Electric power and a location on what is now part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, coupled with the mineral deposits north of the city, provided prospective. A rail line was needed to access the potential wealth locked within the rugged, nearly inaccessible area. Discovery of the Helen Mine resulted in the founding of the steel industry in the Soo area. That, of course, tremendously benefited the Algoma Central. To access the Helen and other mines blossoming in the area, the railroad constructed a line from Michipicoten Harbor toward what is now Hawk Jct. Since the ACR was not yet completed, all construction material, locomotives, cars, etc. were transported by boat from Sault Ste. Marie to Michipicoten Harbor, where construction began.
