For many of us, our first experiences in railfanning are among the most memorable. My first encounter with a train was as a five or six-year old standing with my grandmother at the end of her driveway as a Long Island Rail Road train passed in the distance. Beyond that, my days as a young teen spent trackside in the late 1970's in Kings Park, New York on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch are permanently etched in my mind. I was usually on my bike, hanging out waiting what seemed like an eternity for the next LIRR passenger train to come by. I thank my parents for letting me get out and explore my backyard. The Long Island Alco FAs were the first locomotives to make an impression on me. Sure, they were only 'cab-cars,' stripped of their traction motors, providing only electric power. But I was only eleven or twelve and didn't know any better. What I did know is that they were cool. They were dirty, noisy, and tough-looking and, like Charlie Brown's friend Pig Pen, always had an oily cloud of smoke from their 244 Alco prime movers following them around. They smelled different too. In short, they were far less civilized than the GP38 on the other end of the train. The seed had been firmly planted.
