INTRODUCTION
Early in 1963, with the last American mainline steam locomotives having been replaced by diesel-electric technology in the previous half-dozen years, Alco Products, Inc., kicked off a marketing campaign to introduce what it called a new line of locomotives. These models, Alco said, would replace those that had completed the die-selization of American railroads in the 1950s.
In the February 4, 1963, issue of the trade journal Railway Age, an article appeared under the headline "Alco Offers New Century Locomotive Series; Builder announces three units in new line to meet "future market demands." In it, RA wrote:
"With features designed to simplify maintenance and imnrove nerformance. Alco Prod
ucts predicts its new Century series will cut operating costs by as much as 44 percent, compared with 10-year old diesel locomotives.
In announcing the new series at Chicago on January 29, Alco's president, William S. Miller, said "the new series is the result of the company's research and development program to meet market demands of the future." He said "From 5,000 to 6,000 of present units will require replacement within the next five years.
The Series will grow. Three Century locomotives were introduced but Alco expects other high-horsepower domestic units to be added to the series as required. The three new locomotives are:
