This book recalls an era when the name "Alco Line" had a special significance for railfans. It was a land where you could go to relive times long since vanished in many parts of the country. Most major railroads had their fleets of -Alcos but these were either virtually extinct by the 1970's or so immersed in a sea of EMD and GE units that they were an exception rather than the rule. On the Alco Line the reverse was true.
I grew up watching Alcos working on the Nickel Plate and saw the hordes of RS3s, FAs, and other Schenectady graduates laboring on the New York Central. But this was in the days of my youth; by the time I started taking pictures many of the Central units had long since become trade-in fodder and the Nickel Plate had vanished into the Norfolk and Western. There were Alcos around, of course, but nowhere were they dominant except on a select few properties.
