PREFACE
This handbook is intended specifically for use by students, mechanics, pilots, and engineers who have only superficial knowledge of aircraft-powerplant fundamentals. Its purpose is to acquaint them with application of those fundamentals so that they may be of increasing value to civil aviation.
This publication supersedes Civil Aeronautics Bulletin No. 28, entitled "Pilots' Powerplant Manual," in its entirety. Originally issued in 1940 and revised in 1942, that manual was prepared as a textbook for pilots in connection with the Civilian Pilot Training Program. Since that time, research into various phases of powerplant design and operation has produced definite and important results. New information based on that research work and its results is here presented. It is at variance with previously accepted ideas and practice on some points; that fact, however, stands as a marker of the progress which has been achieved during very recent years.
Virtually all chapters of Bulletin No. 28 have been rewritten extensively in the light of research developments. A notable addition is the chapter on turbo-jet, turboprop, and compound engines. Also included are chapters dealing with performance, vibration, testing, and general operating instructions. An extensive index is introduced to facilitate reference to the contents.
Some readers may regard certain portions of the handbook as being rather advanced, although the text in general is geared to first ventures into the field of powerplant knowledge. Presence of the more advanced material, it is hoped, will be an incentive to go beyond the elementary stages.
Purely descriptive material has been omitted wherever possible, particularly where its inclusion would burden the text with data which might quickly become out of date or which can be obtained easily from other sources. Readers who feel the need for descriptive material are advised to obtain it from the manufactures of the various types of equipment used in powerplant operations.
This handbook was prepared in the Civil Aeronautics Administration's Office of Aviation Safety by personnel of the Powerplant Engineering Division, Aircraft Service. Grateful acknowledgment is extended to the Department of the Air Force, the Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics, and the manufacturers of engines, propellers, and powerplant accessories for their cooperation in making data available for inclusion in this publication.
