222 AIRSCENE The monthly round-up of news and background to the news presented under section headings for Military Affairs, Civil Affairs, Aircraft and Industry and new Civil and Military Aircraft Contracts.
227 POST-MORTEM ON AN AIR WAR John Fricker, reporting from Karachi, provides an account of the Indo-Pakistan air war of December 1971 as viewed by the Pakistan Air Force. Included in this exclusive report are opinions of the relative merits of the combat aircraft used by the two sides, and a list of the Indian Air Force aircraft claimed to have been destroyed by the PAF.
233 A JUMP JET MADE FOR TWO Evolution of the two-seat Hawker Siddeley Harrier T Mk 2 from the basic GR Mk 1 posed a number of interesting problems for the design and flight test departments. A full account of the development phase of this aircraft is given by John Fozard, chief designer (Harrier) and deputy chief engineer of Hawker Siddeley. The illustrations include a cutaway drawing.
240 UNLIMITED RACING WITH THE HOT SHIPS One of the minor phenomena of the US aviation scene is the use of hotted-up World War II fighter types to provide spectacular "unlimited" races at a number of locations each year. Our Veteran and Vintage Department presents a colourful glimpse of these nostalgia-provoking aircraft.
242 THE JODEL REVOLUTION A home-built single-seat lightplane, vintage 1948, was the ancestor of one of the most successful ranges of post-war light aircraft. Offspring of the Joly-Delmontez partnership, the Jodel types continue in production today under the aegis of Avions Pierre Robin, as described by Alan Bramson.
250 TRANSPORT GLIDERS - THE RISE AND DEMISE OF A WEAPON - PART III Continuing the survey of transport gliders, we describe and illustrate the types developed in India, Italy, Japan, the Soviet Union, Sweden and Turkey. The series will continue with US types next month.
254 FIGHTER A to Z Continuing the AIR ENTHUSIAST encyclopaedia of the World's fighter aircraft, from the Arsenal VB 90 to the Austin Osprey.
256 MODEL ENTHUSIAST The latest plastic aircraft kits reviewed and
two pages of colour profile drawings of the Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk.
261 SIRE OF THE U-2: THE LOCKHEED 12-A The Lockheed 12-A is historically important as one of the two types (the other being the Model 10 Electra) on which the Lockheed company founded its fortunes. It was also used for some enterprising spy flights immediately before World War II. These clandestine operations are recalled here, the development of both the Electra and Model 12 is described, and the latter is illustrated by a new cutaway drawing.
268 TURBOJETS OVER TOKYO BAY Japan's sole turbojet aircraft of WW Il made only two flights before the country's capitulation put an end to further development. Its pilot on those two flights, Lt Cdr Susumu Takaoka, here contributes an interesting footnote to history.
