PREFACE
Few books are produced in isolation but this, more than most, is a result of the cooperative effort of many people. Five consulting editors made significant contributions to the final shape and format of the work; these contributions were supported and extended by members of the University of California staff as well as by a number of persons who were simply interested in our project.
The raison &etre for this volume lies in the creation and utilization of the television series, The Age of Uncertainty. These programs, authored and moderated by John Kenneth Galbraith, were produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation in cooperation with KCET-TV, Los Angeles, the Ontario Educational Community Authority and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. As with a number of other series, the result of their work was of such outstanding quality that the University Extension at the University of California, San Diego and Coast Community College District, Costa Mesa, California, elected to work with the television stations in the preparation of a college-level course based on the programs and on the book of the same name by John Kenneth Galbraith (Houghton Mifflin, 1977 ).
The nature of the television series and the Galbraith book are indisputably interdisciplinary. The Age of Uncertainty sweeps across two centuries, bringing the great names of economic and political history into focus and illuminating a number of problems that are of concern to the present-day world. Given the demands generated by this scope, it seemed as if the supporting books the readings and the study guide called for a truly unique approach.
After considerable discussion and thought the University Extension at the University of California, San Diego decided to convene a team of contributing editors for the readings, drawing them from the major disciplines addressed by the course. Each of these senior scholars worked closely with University Extension staff. Dr. Joseph Gusfield, Professor of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Armin Rappaport, Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Georgios H. Anagnostopoulos, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Francine Rabinovitz, Professor of Public Administration and Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California, and Phillis Basile, Associate Professor of Economics at Orange Coast Community College, Costa Mesa, suggested readings for each unit, reviewed final selections, and advised on introductory material. The combination of disciplines was stimulating and exciting and illustrated once again that each subject area provides individuals with a unique approach and perspective. Without these consultants, singly and together, this book could not have been produced.
A number of other people provided valuable advice and assistance throughout the preparation of Points of Departure. Malcolm Macfarlane, currently Product Manager of Systems Engineering Laboratories, Inc., reviewed the chapter on corporations from a businessman's perspective. Richard L. Meier of the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, answered a number of questions about cities. Jim and Rose Hassan taped material that was not available here. The staffs of several libraries traced and recommended materials we owe special thanks to the UC San Diego Central and Cluster Library Staffs, particularly to Mandy Paulson and to Merry Taylor of the Carlsbad Library. These individuals gave generously of their time and attention, although none should be held responsible for the final inclusion of material or for any opinions expressed in the book.
In the actual production of the manuscript Toni Tortorilla was invaluable for her patient administrative and typing support. Pat Campbell secured permission for the use of materials and Virginia Skagen corrected final copy. Sally Wang was indispensable for her research expertise and advice.
On the "macro level," if one may borrow a phrase from the economic aspects of the subject matter, the course was made possible through the efforts of the entire University Extension staff, particularly those of our Dean, Dr. Martin Chamberlain and of Dr. Mary Lindenstein Walshok, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs. These two people, more than any others, have provided direction and inspiration in the creation and continuation of Courses By Television and of the National Media Office, which is now responsible for these courses.
A final word of thanks is due my husband, G. S. Munshi, whose support for a working wife and mother has been a continual source of inspiration and strength.
