The Age of Steam, Part Two, carries on the story of engine-driven warships from the collapse of the movement for naval disarmament in 1936 until 1971. In addition to the significant developments in warship structure and design, it includes the empire-building activities of Germany, Italy, and Japan; all important naval activities of the Spanish Civil War, World War II, the Korean War, the Six-Days' War, and the Vietnamese War; continuity on the period's over-all history to place the naval actions in proper perspective; cold wars and peace-preserving activities; and the current menace of atomic holocaust.
Naturally, most of the book deals with the many and far-flung naval activities of World War II. Treatment is given to the campaigns and battles of all of the involved navies in all parts of the world.
The Age of Steam, Part Two, is the fourth and final book of the series, WAR AT SEA. With the earlier books-The Ancient Fleets, The Age of Sails, and The Age of Steam, Part One-it provides a complete and comprehensive survey of naval activities from 2600 B.C. until the present, written with the knowledge and accuracy an expert would demand and the simplicity and vividness of style required by the lay reader.
