Introduction
This book is about main line railroading using train orders during the transition from steam to diesel locomotives on the Canadian National Railways. It is set in the remote Canadian Shield country in northern Ontario but many of the locomotives operated across Canada and the track plans and operating practices were similar to those at other locations along the CNR's transcontinental system.
Images often tell stories better than words. The photography is primarily centred on Armstrong, Ontario-the CNR's dividing point between Lines East and Lines West and an important division point on the railway. It was a town which existed almost solely for the purpose of getting trains over the CNR's northern main line between Canada's east and west. Coverage has also been provided of many of the other points along the line from Capreol, Ontario to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Several photographs are included of the Transcona Shops and other railway facilities in Winnipeg as they played a significant role in servicing the trains that polished the rails of the CNR across the Canadian Shield. The appendices include detailed information about the CNR's locomotive and rolling stock rosters of the mid 1950s as well as drawings and photos of key stations and bridges.
