INTRODUCTION
A book must have a purpose. The purpose of this book is to perpetuate the memory of the Keokuk & Western and the Humeston & Shenandoah railroads, which later became part of the Burlington system and passed through my hometown, New Market, Iowa. Assembling it has been a labor of love and fond memories over many years duration, during which time many pictures tucked away in albums and attics have surfaced; and since the H&S portion was torn up back in 1946, these have developed historical value and needed to be preserved. I could think of no better way to do this than in a carefully put together book.
An attempt to get the best possible coverage of pertinent material was undertaken, and many people were contacted for pictures of depots, trains and notable right-of-way scenes. Most people were trusting in loaning me their memorabilia, and I appreciate this very much. Preparing this book has been both a challenge and a pleasure.
I was born in New Market, Iowa on the CB&Q (formerly H&S) and took my first railroad picture of Engine 398, a 4-4-0, in 1920 at the age of thirteen. I've been taking pictures ever since, and my interest in the line from Keokuk to Shenandoah has finally culminated in the production of this book.
Sadly, this little railroad was doomed from the day it first turned a wheel, for it traversed an area dotted with an assortment of small towns, but served virtually no place where manufacturing or industry could be a major source of traffic. Business was good and some profit was made, but soon the inevitable automobile and truck came on the scene, and the lure of the highway wiped out the romance of the railroad.
I hope that those of my readers who enjoy the bucolic beauty of the rolling hills and gentle valleys of the lush Iowa countryside and the meandering fills and cuts of a railroad as it winds across our terrain will derive as much enjoyment from these pages as I have in putting together the material that fills them.
