The American Locomotive Company's passenger and freight diesels, PA's and FA's, built following the Second World War, were the company's entry into the competition to replace the steam locomotive as the prime mover on American rails. Alco, long a citadel of steam, had mixed emotions as to the proper place for its allegiance. But with the PA and the FA, they came up with an outstanding and truly unique design which was to hold the interest of railroad enthusiasts throughout, and following, the life of the units. For reasons which this book is not designed to explore, the PA's and FA's were far from numerous compared to total number of diesel units from all builders. This very fact further enhanced their appeal. The purpose, then, of this volume is to provide a permanent record of their looks as they charged across the railroad stage. Their squarish but speedy looking silhouette, and gutteral sound, often with a trailing smoky exhaust, put them in a class by themselves. At least I think so, and I hope you do too!
