It is hoped that by the time the 'King George V' is due to be superannuated museum premises of sufficient dimensions will have been provided to enable that historic engine to be retained intact for all time, complete with its historic bell, on Great Western territory.
This statement formed part of an article which appeared in the Great Western Railway Magazine of 1931. The recommendations made in this article were planned but they failed to materialise.   In 1968, some six years after the locomotive had been withdrawn from service, private enterprise made enquiries into the future of the locomotive. Further developments led to the restoration of the King George V as a living example of the grandeur of the steam locomotive.
Each year thousands of people visit the premises of H. P. Bulmer (Cider Makers) Hereford Ltd., in order to view the locomotive, and many of these visitors request detailed information about the locomotive. After being at the 'receiving end' of the questioners on innumerable occasions I have taken their interest as an incentive and prepared this book as a guide for those wishing to gain a more comprehensive knowledge of this famous locomotive. A research project such as this must, because of the complexity of the subject, rely on the knowledge of others, the experience of those who were involved with the locomotive during her Swindon era and those who have been concerned with the locomotive since her restoration. I am grateful to these people for the help they have given, in particular members of the '6000 Locomotive Association', H. P. Bulmer (Cider Makers) Hereford Ltd., British Rail, Will Andress, Ernie Nutty. Also to Ann Leddington-Hill and Hazel Phillips for typing the manuscript and to Hazel Beecroft for reading and correcting the draft and proof copies.
