FOREWORD                                                                                                                                Welcome aboard a train filled with memories. Welcome aboard a train filled with dreams. Welcome to the story of the rails and of the fruit of our labor, Pacific Railroad Society.
I was greatly honored by being elected president of PRS during its 50th Anniversary year. As one in the series of PRS presidents, I have the thrill of getting to have my name remembered. This is a special feeling, because among the legion of volunteers who have put in countless hours to preserve and to make railroad history under the banners of Railroad Boosters, and then Pacific Railroad Society, Inc., there are those whose names are not easily remembered. I sincerely hope that, in this work, you will discover the scope of their contributions and sacrifices.
Some of them did the work out of a sense of duty and community responsibility. Others enjoyed the friends they made and the good times they had while they were doing tasks for PRS. They all shared a deep love for railroading.
Not many of today's children can remember riding on the Union Pacific City streamliners. Few of our contemporaries know the thrill of the cacophony of a passing Southern Pacific cab-forward. The flash of a Santa Fe red "Warbonnet" heading a gleaming silver Super Chief is no longer seen across the plains. Still, these trains are documented and remembered, because they represented a valuable part of American life. Also remembered, because of the fine work of Tom Nelson, the many authors who contributed to this work, and the production staff, are our PRS friends of the past, for the accomplishments of PRS are their legacy.
