It was with a great deal of eagerness that we approached Herbert H. Harwood, Jr., to do a PRR "Great Photos" volume. ..our review of his superb collection of B&O and NYC photos, leavened with his own work, had proved to be a rewarding experience.
As the reader is about to see, we were not disappointed. . .Mr. Harwood's diligence in acquiring and preserving negatives from other photographers has resulted in an amazing visual record of the Glory Years of the redoubtable PRR.
Mr. Harwood was "born 2/1/31 in New York City, although I feel I'm not really a native of anywhere-my parents were railroad nomads (father worked for New York Central) and we lived for long stretches in New York, Washington, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
"Graduated from Princeton University 1953 cum laude in History; got MBA in Transportation Economics from Columbia 1955. Immediately afterwards, went to work for C&O where I've pretty much been since. Started in C&O Finance in Cleveland; in 1963, moved to Baltimore in the newly-combined C&O/B&O marketing department; since then have had various jobs in Chessie marketing and sales. At the moment I'm handling Merchandise Traffic administration.
"I never made much distinction between steam and diesel power in my photos -I liked them all and shot them all, although steam obviously had both an emotional and pictorial edge. Besides being an active photographer myself, I've been a negative collector of sorts-largely as a result of my historical interests and my desire to preserve photo material from collections that are being broken up and lost.
"So far, I've managed to produce four books (Hagerstown & Frederick, Washington & Old Dominion, The Fifty Best of B&O, The Fifty Best of NYC) and have vague dreams of doing a biography of Cleveland's Van Sweringen brothers. I've also done articles and monographs on all sorts of subjects, including railroad and interurban histories, station histories, book reviews, articles on railroad management and whatall."
Sit back, relax and enjoy a journey into the past. . .
