CELEBRATING THE DAYLIGHT LEGEND AND 50 YEARS (1941-1991) OF 4449
The Daylight-series of steam locomotives were among the most famous in the world even before No. 4449 was pulled out of Oaks Park in Portland, Ore. in 1974 to undergo the restorative process that would see the locomotive not only pull The American Freedom Train in 1975-76 but propel a variety of special passenger trains across the Western U.S. during the decade beginning in 1981.
The history of these locomotives is well documented, so we'll provide only a summary here. The earliest predecessors of No. 4449 were the 14 locomotives of class GS-I, which introduced the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement (four lead "pony" truck wheels, eight driving wheels, four trailing-truck wheels) to the Southern Pacific in 1930. While "General Service" gives indication that the locomotives were ably suited for both passenger and freight service, classes GS-I through GS-5 were successively put into service on the railroad's best passenger trains and showed their mettle in freight service only through demotion in later years.
The GS-2 class became a predecessor to No. 4449 in basic appearance as well as wheel arrangement, as it was the six locomotives (4410-4415) of this class that were the first gracefully streamlined with skirting and skyline casings, and painted red, orange and black to match the colorful new streamlined train, the Coast Daylight, which SP was inaugurating between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 1937. The locomotives, which also became known by the name "Daylight," were built by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, had 73-inch diameter drive wheels, and featured a single headlight protruding from a distinctive silver-painted conical nose and smokebox door.
