34 HOURS 35 MINUTES 40 SECONDS
IN this century Santa Fe has been in the habit of holding the Chicago-Los Angeles rail-speed blue riband. In 1905 the railroad was paid rather handsomely by Death Valley Scotty to earn him (and it) the record by putting away 2246 miles in 44 hours 54 minutes for an average speed of 50 mph. Despite the advent of Hudsons and 4-8-4's, Scotty's special was not challenged until 1934, when Union Pacific's streamlined M-10001 covered the 2287-mile UP-C&NW route in 38 hours 52 minutes at an average of 58.8 mph. In 1937 Santa Fe took back the record by running its new streamlined Super Chief from L.A. to Chicago, 2228.4 miles, in 36 hours 49 minutes at an average speed of 60.5 mph.
Today we have a new Chicago-California record. Santa Fe holds it - 2202 miles in 34 hours 35 minutes 40 seconds, or an average of 63.7 mph - and it is significant on three counts: (1) freight, not passengers, was involved; (2) little extraordinary effort was required; and (3) accordingly, the record is not apt to last for long.
Super C, Santa Fe's new premium-priced container-piggyback train, took the blue riband for its first official westbound revenue trip, after departing the road's Corwith Yard in Chicago at 2:10:10 p.m. [CST] on January 17, 1968, and arriving at Hobart Yard, Los Angeles, at 10:35:50 p.m. [PST] on January 18. The consist included brand-new Electro-Motive 3600 h.p. C-C FP-45's 100 and 102; test car 5105 (an ex-California Limited combine-lounge) ; 4-drawing-room, 1-bedroom, observation Pullman Donehot-so; office cars Mountainair (ex-U. S. Steel Laurel Ridge) and Topeka; 7 piggyback flats with 14 trailers
