Looking back on railroading in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, there was a dramatic move to upgrade rail property and equipment. This caused great change in railroading, and change is what is reflected in this colorful book.
From big blue and white Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern 2,000 hp Baldwins shown in 1948, to a husky Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 4-6-4 near Rock Island, Illinois in 1958, to U25Bs hauling freight on the Erie-Lackawanna near Griffith, Indiana in 1968, this book is a tribute to America's rails, and an overview of the streamlining railroads have accomplished in this period.
Author Porter takes you on a picturesque ride where you capture steam and diesel locomotives, freight and passenger trains, as well as gas-electrics, RDCs and oddities such as Whitcomb 44-tonners. For more than half a century, Russ has followed America's railroads, capturing their moods and their tracks, and now brings you a sampling of what he found.
From the small Chicago & Western Indiana and the Terminal Railroad Association to the main line roads such as the Pennsylvania, Northern Pacific and Santa Fe, America's Rail Pictorial offers up the flavor of each line during different decades. And if you enjoy the really unusual, the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railroad should be of interest.
Russ started taking photographs of trains in the 1930s, and once the bug bit, there was no stopping him. He has seen the whole spectrum of railroading, and now invites you to take a front row seat and relax as the camera takes you on a guided tour of railroads in America. As the slogan used to say, "Nothing could be finer."
