This book is concerned with the planning, construction, operation and evolution of railways in countries in process of development. It thus concentrates upon the least expensive type of railway: the single line. One of the major objects is to show how the capacity of such a line may be increased. With modern techniques a single track can indeed be expanded from a system of the most primitive type, carrying only one or two trains a day, to a railway the capacity of which enables it to handle efficiently all the traffic of a well-developed country. With techniques now available, doubling of the line may never be required even to cope with still further increases in traffic.
The book deals with civil engineering, motive power, rolling stock, and signalling, with discussions upon the relative merits of different forms of traction and the traffic potentialities of different forms of signalling. Quite apart from the engineering and operation of single line railways, however, the book includes sections on the financing and projecting of a railway, and also turns its attention to staff matters and means for increasing productivity. While these chapters have been written with single line railways particularly in mind, they are applicable also to railways in general.
The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs and diagrams covering railways in many parts of the world. Although the book is primarily intended for the overseas market, it will undoubtedly fascinate the British branchline enthusiast.
