Something very important in the history of transport happened on 13 June 1842, for on that day, for the first time in history, the reigning monarch of Great Britain made a journey by railway. Its importance was not merely that of an interesting event, of any other public royal progress. By using the railway, Queen Victoria set a seal of respectability on the new way of travel. It had been claimed as a safe and reliable thing, though many still regarded it as hazardous, even perilous, comparable to ballooning or exploring unknown country. The Queen's essay convinced many of the timid that the rail must, after all, he quite a safe thing; that in spite of all that had been said against it there was no probability of a journey ending in a massacre, or of the dreadful steam engine exploding without warning and blowing all around it to pieces. Not all were convinced, as we shall see, but the event had a most favourable effect on floating opinion.
The Queen had been nervous of the new form of travel, as she was of all innovations, and there is little doubt that she was reassured and influenced by Prince Albert and other members of the royal family circle,
