INTRODUCTION
Railroad trains in North America, Europe and most of the rest of the world are equipped with some form of the automatic air brake. The air brake system is used to provide a simple, reliable, fail safe means for permitting the engineman to apply the brakes on each car and locomotive unit in order:
1) To slow down for speed restrictions, such as signals, curves, bridges, turnouts, switches, etc.;
2) To control or stabilize train slack, particularly on undulating territory with hills (hog backs) and valleys (sags);
3) To control train speed down grades, often in conjunction with locomotive dynamic brakes;
4) To stop when desired or required by signals.
The automatic air brake is a continuous power brake system, with a brake pipe extending throughout the train connecting the engineman's brake valve and the control valve on each car and locomotive unit. Valves and control devices vary somewhat in their number and/or arrangement, and in the particular operating features to suit locomotive hauled freight or passenger service. Passenger brake equipment is further subdivided if trains are made up of multiple-unit self-powered cars.
The study and understanding of the air brake system is important to ensure the safe and reliable operation of railways. The basic ability of a railway to perform its service for the public depends upon the train brake system. Allowable speeds and thus overall schedule speeds relate directly to the ability of the train to stop before it passes the next signal -- which might be red!
It should be recognized that the air brake system and its devices must be operated, inspected and maintained according to the recommendations of the manufacturers, and in accordance with the currently effective AAR and FRA rules. If equipment or devices are not operated, inspected or maintained in this manner, they may not perform as described in this air brake text.
