AUTHORS PREFACE
This book will show the unfortunate results of human error, equipment failure, and malevolent chance. Sometimes there is tragedy to report; this is done in the spirit of keeping alive the historical record of all that was and is railroading. This publication is a memorial to those who lost their lives in railroad accidents. This publication will also provide additional information on the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad's wooden and steam cranes, and the Reading Railroad's diesel cranes.
One would think that since train wrecks affected the lives of so many people, gathering information for this book would be an easy task. The truth, however, is the opposite. One of the duties of the Reading Railroad police were to keep onlookers away from the scene of a wreck. Thus, many remote derailments were never captured by the amateur photographer. Also, finding these amateur photographs is quite difficult. Fortunately, when an accident occurred the Reading Railroad would take numerous photographs to aid their investigation into the cause. The majority of these accidents investigation reports were stored in the attic of the Outer Station, and when the station was lost by fire, these reports were destroyed. The Reading Railroad also stored records in the Motive Power & Rolling Equipment building in Reading. These records, for the most part, were destroyed in the early ConRail years.
