Model railroad enthusiasts are of three main types: craftsmen who fashion miniature trains and track layouts, collectors who like to possess fine examples of the models, and those who, captured by the romance of railroads or of modelmaking, are content merely to admire finely produced replicas. Among addicts - and for the true enthusiast 'addict' is the right word- some are interested mainly in the locomotive; others are intrigued by the complete train of engine, coaches, and freight cars, while others are so fascinated that they execute exact duplicates of actual countryside, complete with buildings, through which to run their trains. Perhaps the ultimate perfectionists are those who create track layouts on which trains run at a time scale in proportion to the size, or who make a replica of a trainyard with the specific trains and cars that were there on a particular day in the past.
The author of this book, Guy R. Williams, investigates at length the world of model railroads - the psychology and skills of the model makers, the exacting fidelity of their creations in reproducing the originals, and especially their methods of work. His survey, reflecting his background as an engineering draftsman and a teacher, also includes the history of models, which dates back to the time before the first public railroads were even completed. In his discussion he provides information useful to model makers of all degrees of competence, as indicated by such chapters as 'Truth, Gauges, and Scale; 'Making Model Locomotives; 'Coaches and Freight Cars,"Layouts,"Signals; and 'Landscape'
Many devotees, of course, are captured by their fascination for models as examples of fine craftsmanship. The great ones from the past are now revered as works of art, and even the cheap tinplate trains that flooded the toy markets in the early twentieth century are eagerly sought. The author takes advantage of photographs and illustrations in color and black and white to demonstrate why it is so easy to succumb to the lure of the miniature.
Guy Williams has been assisted in preparing this book by the officials and members of model railroad organizations all over the world, and has been guided by the editors of the principal model magazines and periodicals in America and Europe. His accumulated knowledge is revealed in the most authoritative book on model railroads to date.
