Since the inception of railways in the early part of the nineteenth century, model railways have endeavoured to imitate the development of their older and much larger brothers. During the early years the models either took the form of manufacturers' samples or were made into crude toys, often of the pull-along-the-floor variety.
However the discovery of litho printing on tinplate led enterprising manufacturers near Nuremburg in Germany to marry the art of clockworks to that of toy production, and model trains became viable commercial propositions. Soon manufacturers in the USA and Britain began to make and market these new toys and model trains found their way into tens of thousands of homes throughout the world. As the amount of leisure time increased, so home modelling became more popular and more highly skilled.
Today the model train hobby has grown beyond the wildest dreams of its progenitors. The introduction of plastics has brought wonderfully detailed models within the reach of everyone. Modelling magazines encourage the hobby and model shops continue to flourish. The World of Model Trains shows the historical development of the hobby, examines small-scale modelling in detail, looks at the building of the larger, fully operational miniature locomotives, shows how to make base-boards, build track, construct scenery and make a realistic miniature railway system at home. The World of Model Trains is a highly illustrated, comprehensive, technical and practical work to be enjoyed by all model train enthusiasts of all ages : those who collect them, those who build them and those who are content to admire the work of others.
