When a youngster thrills to a passing express or to the complexity of railway operation, he wants to represent what he sees in miniature form: and when he does this, when I e has a layout of his own, he goes back again and again to the real railway for more ideas to copy. The two systems, big and small, are related in his mind.
It is the unique virtue of this book that it responds to the boy's own imagination by showing the model railway as a reflection of the railway which is importantly part of our daily lives. From small beginnings the reader is led gradually along the line of progress, working out his own problems as they are worked out in actual railway practice. Laying track, fixing signals, devising remote control, attending to maintenance-in these and other activities he is the practical young engineer.
By the time he has read The World of Model Railways he knows all that he needs to know of the subject at that stage, from the construction of scenery to the proper order of vehicles in a particular train. He is also given an encouraging view of the road ahead, while the attention paid to American Continental practice, both full-scale and miniature, heightens his sense of sharing in a world-wide comradeship.
Like the hobby itself, The World of Model Railways has an educational value. It is bright, entertaining and easy to understand, but the occasional difficulties which arise are faced squarely and nothing has been admitted that is not workable.
If the subjects discussed lie close to a boy's heart, they are interesting also to the beginner of any age. Perhaps, then, The World of Model Railways is best described as a practical guide for everyone who has fallen under the spell.
