PREFACE
In introducing Model Railways as a hobby, there is no need to mention the general interest and fascination all men folk derive from the real railways ; for it usually dates way back into boyhood's days.
This book, then, assumes interest on the part of the reader-who would not be reading were it absent-and seeks to introduce him to the pros and cons of the hobby as it concerns him. The more abstruse technicalities have purposely been avoided, as these are dealt with at length in other books.
A model railway may start as a " toy," but it generally develops into a pastime, and one absorbing in its versatility. Electricity, mechanics, civil engineering, draughtsmanship, woodwork, metalwork and a veritable host of other crafts are all represented, and demand their share of the enthusiast's skill and thought.
The model railway hobby is one that is always complete yet never finished, and so savours much of philately and other " collecting " hobbies-plus the constructional side ; and this is one of the most forceful reasons for its appeal to the " handyman."
No other hobby offers such unlimited scope for individuality and ability ; or for general amusement with such an educative background. Yet it is a hobby that does not call for exceptional skill or mental gymnastics, It truly is the " hobby for the million."
