After having been retired from the railroad for more than a decade, recollecting people and events in proper sequences proved very difficult. Even solicitations from fellow employees was of very little help due to their having the same problem. For this reason, I decided to refer back to the annual reports that the company had issued over the course of my career.
During the past three years over which I have labored to put this story on paper, it has become apparent to me that the lapse in time from my retirement to the present has been very helpful in putting many events and personalities in better perspective. This experience has seemed to me to be a case of backing away from the forest far enough to appreciate the relationship among the many and varied types of trees.
