Introduction

The Wonderful World of Automobiles 1895-1930 chronicles the birth and early growth of America's largest industry -and, to a degree, this industry's far-reaching influence on American life. Its pages tell, through painstaking reproductions of hundreds of old photographs and drawings and the text that originally accompanied them, this story as it was told when it was actually happening.

With only two exceptions, all of the material found in this book is presented in the order in which it was originally published. The year in which the material originally appeared is shown at the top of each page. All editorial matter is also identified as to source at the bottom of the page. Advertisements, which appeared in a number of different publications, are identified only as to year. In the presentation of material from a given year, editorial material appears first and is followed by the ads from that same year. In order to conform to our format, some material has been slightly reduced or enlarged and some articles have required rearrangement. However, none of these has been changed editorially so that in no case has the original flavor been altered. The bibliography on page 288 lists the rare and unusual sources from which the editorial material was taken.

The first item that appears "out of order" chronologically is the first chapter of the book, "Self-Propelled Vehicles," which was published in 1906 but which we have used as the latter part of the historical discussion that opens the book. The second is an article from a 1903 issue of Outing magazine titled, "The Rediscovery of America by the Automobile," which seemed so germane in 1971 that it provided an ideal note on which to close.
