INTRODUCTION
In less than half-a-century, air travel has evolved into one of the most popular, quickest, safest, and vital components of transportation available today. Each day, thousands of commercial airliners take to the skies carrying nearly 650 million passengers across the country and throughout the world each year.
The flying public, from the frequent business to the occasional leisure traveler, rely heavily on this booming industry, especially when given a moment's notice. Including our nation's very first passenger service airline in 1926, Western Airlines, which merged with Delta Air Lines in the spring of 1987, hundreds of air carriers have flown out of business. Today, over 300 major, national, and regional airlinesboth domestic and international  are flying the world's competitive skies. The United States plays a dominant role in the airline industry where multiple airlines are owned, operated, and based. From the nation's largest airport, Colorado's Denver International Airport, to the nation's busiest, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia, airlines not only maintain their own bustling schedules, but are able to keep up with their passengers as well. Air cargo services, provided by several air cargo companies and mostly all commercial airlines, handle important packages by the hundreds of thousands each day, and manage to get them to their destinations on time. Many companies also offer same-day air services which many people and businesses opt to take advantage of.
As airlines struggle to sustain the building demand of the global industry, a very competitive market has been developed thus far. This strong, tense competition has been beneficial to the consumer by keeping some of the typical "sky-high" air fares low, primarily in markets where competition is most heavy. However, it has proven devastating to the airlines and its employees, especially during times of financial despair in an otherwise struggling economy. Many airlines survive only a few years, while others revitalize with a promising plea as the newer, mainly low cost, budget startups often pledge. While the largest airlines, primarily legacy carriers, seem to be in control of the market, newer startups continue to form almost as rapidly as others are grounded or merged into other airline companies. Regardless of the ups and downs of the industry, however, it suffices to say that clear skies are ahead for our nation's air carriers. In the times that lie before us, airlines continue to reform and restructure to offer its customers and investors a promising financially successful and profitably stable future, which will eventually lead to future job creation, newer expanded routes, partnerships and alliances, and experimentation of innovative concepts in order to reduce costs; yet hoping to maintain a more lucrative, cost efficient, and expanded global network. The introduction of alternative jet fuel may become available in the near future, significantly easing operating costs and contributing to environmentally-friendly energy needs.
Hub-and-spoking throughout the world, airlines continue to maintain a close watch on each other, beating competitors' fares and matching the lowest "peanuts fares", as some of the growing "no-frills" airlines tend to offer. Many new venture and renowned airlines have a promising outlook on passenger service nowadays. Comfort has been an increasingly key issue, leading to the introduction of additional legroom in the main cabin adding to customer appeal, and newer, state-of-the-art airport facilities continue to break ground. While travelers benefit from these changes, some customary expectations have changed as well. Traditional meal service on almost all airlines flying domestically have been replaced with the latest concept of "buy-on-board" options, and certain amenities we're accustomed to are no longer free of charge, thus introducing a new concept now defined as "debundling". Travelers are now faced with paying additional fees from services ranging from checking baggage at the airline's ticket counter to making reservations through their reservations call center, which will progressively continue to be a growing system-wide trend.
Since this increasingly dynamic, ever-changing industry varies widely in the airline companies' names, ownership information, paint schemes/liveries, services, logos, data, statistics, and marketing brand names, it is sometimes considered a challenge to uphold the correct and current information to ensure the accuracy the information contained within this publication, as it is subject to change at any time; and should be considered a valuable "snapshot-in-time" piece of resourceful literature you as the reader can cherish and appreciate for years to come. Whether you're just enjoying the many photographs and illustrations or reading to familiarize yourself with some of the airline companies to better acquaint you, some perhaps you may be all-too-familiar with, I hope this "fact-filled guide" will serve whatever purposes you seek.
This book is primarily intended to provide a historical, factual, and illustrated overview for airline enthusiasts, future and present employees, frequent travelers, and the vast majority of people in the growing world of aviation, to the nation's fastest- growing major and regional airlinesthe wings over America.
