The Pennsylvania Traction Series is dedicated to preserving and recording the history of the age of the trolley in Pennsylvania.
The street railway transportation system in northern Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania, centered in Wilmington and Chester, was owned and operated by a number of interstate corporations. For most of its existence, the system was controlled by the WILMINGTON & PHILADELPHIA TRACTION COMPANY. This corporation operated all of the electric light and power business in the City of Wilmington and vicinity and street railway lines in Wilmington, New Castle, Chester, and Media and suburban lines connecting these places with each other and the City of Philadelphia. The combined system, at its peak, operated 371 cars over 136 miles of track.
The trolleys provided reliable transportation in the region, carrying citizens to and from their daily work, on shopping trips, and in the summer breezy open cars carried them to regional amusement parks..
Herewith, then, is a backward look by word and picture into the time of the trolley. I hope that this volume will bring you as much pleasure as its preparation has to its author.
