We all can associate railroading with the medium of photography. Nostalgia, detail, the unusual and at times the tragic can all be conveyed via photos. The ancient Chinese were not wrong when they said a picture is worth a thousand words. Leading in, the thread of chronology picks up in the steam-diesel transitional years of the postwar 40's, continuing through the 50's, 60's and on into the current 70's. Underlying is a theme that in the West we have some unique and spectacular railroading, unparalleled in some cases in both the terrain and the equipment that operates upon it.
The West is a vast land, and in covering it, this book has thoughtfully apportioned its major areas into 10 diverse chapters. The Pacific Northwest, the Montana Big Sky country, the Rockies and the Arizona/New Mexico/Nevada areas need not compete with the bustle and activity of the Golden State. Each has its own attraction, which was only intensified recently by the steaming presence of 4449.
WHEELS ROLLING-WEST is an outgrowth of the CTC Board Annual. It is a project that grew and grew until it had to become an entity all its own. Dave Styffe has grasped the importance of this treasury of photographs, and mixed with the outstanding photography and writing of Ted Benson, something very pleasing has resulted.
