When Ian Allan Ltd published Robert Adley's first railway book, British Steam in Camera-colour 1962-68, in 1979, it was the first all-colour book of British Railways' working steam. This is his sixth railway book. In the intervening eight years he has developed a distinctive literary style that has helped to push his hardback sales into six figures.
Whereas his previous books have contained lively but random chapters, featuring mainly his own colour photogaphs taken between 1962 and 1968, Wheels is themed to concentrate on selected British locomotive wheel-arrangements. Robert Adley has supplemented previously unpublished material from his own collection of colour photographs with unique material from the Science Museum, in the form of historic coloured working drawings. Black and white photographs, including some of his own (and his first to be published), but mostly from the library of the National Railway Museum, help to tell the tale, recounted in the author's lively style, of the development of his selected wheel-arrangements.
In the preservation era, colour photographs of steam locomotives at work are repeatable, replaceable, and commonplace. Robert Adley's photography, undertaken before the days of fast colour film and SLR cameras, tells a different tale; the story of the grimy, depressing, neglected end of steam. This book combines the atmosphere of steam's final years, with an informative text that puts into its historic place the role of many famous British locomotives.
